It is estimated that China will overtake Japan in terms of the number of homes connected with fiber in the recent future but before 2011. Japan will still enjoy the position as leader of FTTH in terms of the percentage of houses connected with fiber. The household penetration rate will be higher in Japan than in China.
China’s annual consumption of optical fiber is around 35 to 40 million kilometers. This domestic fiber consumption is higher than the domestic production and it forces some of the Chinese companies to buy optical fibers from outside. The approximate 30% of the global consumption of optical fibers by China is a significant growth factor.
FTTH projects in China are also booming. It is in this scenario the news from Alcatel-Lucent came that it has got nearly 40% of China Telecom’s fiber to the home (FTTH) network projects in 2009. China Telecom will be able to deliver cost-effectively high-revenue, user-centric broadband services over distances of up to 20km, via an optical fiber, on Alcatel-Lucent’s gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) solution in 5 of its deployments. The new FTTH projects in China and the contracts were secured through Alcatel-Lucent’s flagship company in China, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell.
As part of the project requirement, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) platform. ISAM FTTU is Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution for delivering ultra high-speed services to residential and business users. The GPON platform will be complemented by the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System (AMS) – Alcatel-Lucent’s next-generation element management system that covers the entire ISAM product portfolio, encompassing DSL as well as fiber-based access.
As per information from Alcatel-Lucent, they are the worldwide leader in the fixed broadband access market, supporting the largest mass deployments of video, voice and data services. Currently, one out of three fixed broadband subscribers around the world is served through an access network provided by Alcatel-Lucent. Alcatel-Lucent is currently involved in over 90 FTTH projects worldwide, over 75 of which are with GPON. Leading service providers such as Verizon, France Telecom and Hanaro Telecom have adopted Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution. Additionally, Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON has been deployed by a considerable number of utility companies as well as municipalities and regions around the world
