Omantel Invests in Extensive International Fiber Optic Network

A memorandum of understanding has been signed with Rostelecom of Russia, Telecommunications infrastructure company of Iran and Cable and Wireless of UK for a new high speed, high bandwidth, low latency communication line to connect Frankfurt in Germany to Oman.

The new communication cable system will connect Europe and the Middle East, passing through Russia and Iran. The cables that will be laid to make the communication network will be a combination of terrestrial and submarine fiber optic cables. European countries and Iran could be covered with the proposed terrestrial fiber optic cables. The sea between Iran and Oman has to be covered with the laying of undersea fiber optic cables.

The proposed completion of the cable system is approximately one year from now. The landing point of the submarine fiber optic cable will be the Sultanate of Oman. Omantel will manage the submarine cable and landing stations and the related business.

Iran was known as Persia. The new Europe-Persia Express Gateway will connect ultimately with the existing Europe-India Gateway. The Europe-India cable system is already in operation from Blue City in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Europe-Persia Express Gateway or EPEG will give an alternative route to the communication link between Asia to Europe. Most of the Fiber optic connections between Asia and Europe pass through the Mediterranean sea. EPEG will provide a new route through the Sultanate of Oman. Currently, there are many global undersea cable systems that have landing stations in the Sultanate of Oman. These cable connections are from around the world like China, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. Thus global data providers can collaborate with Omantel for business in the Sultanate.

The international connectivity to Oman will provide faster and efficient access to the global network to the subscribers of Omantel. Omantel is the state-owned telecom operator in the Sultanate of Oman. Omantel has a share in  Oman Fiber Optic Cable company, which produce a variety of fiber optic cables and supply to the telecom operators in the Middle East and North African region.

Rostelecom is the national telecommunications operator of Russia. Rostelecom owns an extensive network of fiber optic cables throughout Russia. The length of the fiber optic network owned by Rostelecom is estimated to be around 160,000 kilometers. Rostelecom enjoys a strong position in the international telecom business segment. They have established international connectivity with more than 150 operators in 70 countries.

Telecommunications Infrastructure company of Iran or Telecommunications Company of Iran (TCI) was established in the year 1971 which provides communications services within the country and collaborate with international telecommunications operators.

Cable and Wireless own the biggest fiber optic cable network dedicated to business customers in the United Kingdom. Cable and Wireless have an international cable network that connects to 153 countries worldwide directly and through partner networks. Cable and Wireless’s cable networks reach across the Atlantic ocean, through Europe to India and other parts of Asia spanning approximately 500,000 kilometers.
