Seacom Signs Service Agreement with Telecomunicações de Moçambique

Submarine cable operator Seacom has signed a master services agreement with a Mozambican service provider, Telecomunicações de Moçambique to provide access to the largest fiber-optic network in Mozambique. Sources in Seacom said the agreement would give them and their customers access to the largest and most distributed fiber-optic network in Mozambique. In addition, the agreement will open up a diverse route into Zimbabwe and a border presence in Malawi and South Africa.

Seacom is famous for its submarine fiber optic cable network system, which was launched on July 23, 2009. This network directly connects South Africa and eastern Africa with Europe and southern Asia, covering a distance of more than 17 000km.

Customers in Zimbabwe would be able to connect to the Seacom system in Maputo, Mozambique, via Mutare in Zimbabwe.

Seacom also said the additional route through Mozambique would complement Seacom’s existing route through South Africa via Beit Bridge and provide Zimbabwean customers with resiliency (maintaining an acceptable level of service during faults and challenges to normal operation) and redundancy (backup systems).

In a press release, the company said that the agreement with Telecomunicações de Moçambique demonstrates their commitment to partner with established players to improve the range of service to their customers while continuously expanding the reach of Seacom’s low-cost services into landlocked countries across the region.

SEACOM is a submarine cable operator with a network of the submarine and terrestrial high-speed fiber-optic cable that serves the East and West coasts of Africa. SEACOM’s reach extends into Europe and the Asia-Pacific via India. The Pan-African network uses bundled back-haul, open access PoP’s (Points of Presence) and global partnerships to provide end-to-end wholesale and enterprise connectivity around the world for African and international network and content operators.

In-service since July 2009, SEACOM has increased the availability of international bandwidth ten-fold, and more so in many of Africa’s most under-served nations. The only privately funded and truly neutral carrier in its market, SEACOM also offers a comprehensive suite of IP/MPLS (Internet Protocol & Multi-Protocol Label Switching) and clear channel services to the wholesale and enterprise segments.
