GlobeNet, Subsea fiber cable operator owned by Brazilian telecom operator Oi has completed the construction on a new high capacity subsea cable system, Segment 5. This network links Bermuda and the United States.
The subsea network system, Segment 5, which was announced in last year January is designed to support 150 wavelengths per fiber pair at 100 Gbps per wavelength. The new network segment is around 1,350 km in long and lands in St. David’s, Bermuda and Tuckerton, New Jersey.
GlobeNet says that Segment 5 has the largest cross-sectional capacity per fiber pair of any system built or contracted to date and incorporates TE SubCom submarine line terminating equipment [SLTE], which allows transmission of multiple high-quality, high-bandwidth optical signals over ultra-long distances.
Latin America has been experiencing an explosive demand for high speed bandwidth to support the wide adoption of video, gaming, and online data services over the past few years. The new Segment 5 replacement enables GlobeNet to deliver the latest in technology to its wholesale and carrier clients.
