Sumitomo to Partner New Fiber Optic Network in Myanmar

 Myanmar has been an attractive investment location for Asian telecom companies since the country started showing its shift from Autocratic governance to democracy. Many of the have been on the process of expanding their businesses in Myanmar. The country needs to have infrastructure at all levels. The basic developments have yet not been started in the vast majority of the country.


Myanmar needs basic infrastructures such as road, rail and other means of transportations. More and more telecommunication infrastructures are required to be funded, which the Myanmar Government alone can not implement. Country needs a deeper level of help and assistance to catch up with the rest of the world. Japan, being one of the developed countries in Asia had extended their assistance to Myanmar after the country's decision to go for democratic election, declared a waive off of loan.

Telecom infrastructure is required for a country's development. Construction of next generation telecom networks needs expertise and experience. Japan and its telecom giants have in-depth knowledge, research and practical experiences in building telecom infrastructures. Japan is home to at least three world leading fiber optic product manufacturers and many telecom infrastructure providers.

Now, one of the major global fiber optic product manufacturing companies, Sumitomo will partner with NEC and NTT to construct a high speed optical fiber network in Myanmar. They have reached an agreement and and contract with Myanmar Government to materialize this project. The high speed fiber optic network will be constructed to connect three major cities.

The fiber optic network will transmit 30 Gbps. Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Twa are the three cities to be connected by the new fiber optic network. Inside of these cities will also be connected with fiber optic cables, which will be used to transmit data at a speed of 10 Gbps. Fiber optic networks will act a catalyst in a country's growth process.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2013. The Japanese company will conduct an operational support program to enable Myanmar technicians to utilize the new facilities. The Japanese telecom companies will take advantage of a grant of 17 million US dollars pledged by the Japanese government to Myanmar.

The three cities to be connected with fiber optic cables are the most populous cities of Myanmar. The new fiber optic network will improve the connectivity in the these cities and will serve as a key infrastructure for long-term evolution (LTE) high-speed wireless communications, fixed-line phone, and Internet services.
