Telus will invest US$103 million in the Edmonton region in 2013 to build telecommunication infrastructure including wireless and fiber optic cable networks.
Telus has plan to spend $700 million across Alberta this year as part of a total US$2-billion commitment. Telus had invested a good amount in telecom business since 2000.
The new infrastructure will connect hundreds of new homes and businesses directly to fiber optic network. High speed optical connectivity will improve user experience. The improvements will radically increase Internet speeds and power Optik TV offered by Telus. By the end of 2013, Telus plans to extend the service to nearly 90% of the houses in Alberta. Currently there are 712,000 Optik TV customers.
Telus is also installing dozens of new wireless sites to improve coverage and wireless data capacity in urban areas, rural communities and highway corridors. Telus has rolled out 4G LTE to more than 85 per cent of Albertans, including those in communities along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway between Edmonton and Calgary, the Cold Lake region, Lake Louise and Banff.
