ST is the most common fiber optic connector for multimode networks such as those used in buildings and campuses. ST connector has a long cylindrical ferrule for holding the fiber and a bayonet mount. The ST connector is considered the most popular for multimode fiber connections as it is cheap and easy to install.
SC fiber optic connector is a snap-in connector that latches that uses a simple push-pull action. SC connectors are used in single mode systems. SC connector shows excellent performance and is also available in a duplex configuration. The MU connector, which is popular in Japan that looks like a miniature SC with a 1.25-mm ferrule.
LC connector is a standard ceramic ferrule connector and has almost half the size of an ST connector. LC connector connector is used in single mode systems, performs well, and is easily terminated with any adhesive. E2000/LX5 is a connector that is similar to the LC, but has a shutter over the end of the fiber.
MT-RJ connector is used in multimode systems only. MT-RJ connector is a duplex connector with both fibers in a single polymer ferrule. Pins are used for alignment with male and female versions.
Another duplex connector is Opti-Jack connector. The Opti-Jack is a rugged connector designed around two ST-type ferrules in a package that’s the size of an RJ-45. Opti-Jack connector has both male and female (jack and plug) versions.
Volition connector is an inexpensive duplex connector that uses no ferrule. Volition connector connector aligns fibers in a V-groove. Volition connectors are mainly used for pre-terminated cable assemblies. It is an MT connector, with a 12-fiber connector for ribbon cable.
