In an attempt to test the fiber optic network capacity in Spain, Vodafone in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent had successfully conducted a trial to transmit 400 Gigabits per second data over its network. The network selected for trial transmission was around 400 kilometers long that runs between Madrid and Zaragoza. Alcatel-Lucent used its 400 G transmission technology for the test to demonstrate the existing network capacity to carry up to 17.6 Tbps (Terabits per second).
Vodafone’s existing fiber-optic network is operating a mixture of 10, 40 and 100 Gigabits per second traffic. Alcatel’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch technology was used to conduct the trial for 400 Gbps. The trial was also used to evaluate whether 400 Gbps transmission can be mixed to the existing transmission speeds in the same network. While adding 400 Gbps transmission rates, existing traffic is not disturbed. Also, no re-engineering to the existing network is required to add 400 Gbps to the link.
