The past several years witnessed the rapid adoption of 10/100M Ethernet or Fast Ethernet due to the low cost and compatibility with existing local area networks (LANs). However, the network bandwidth still limits the data transfer speed that users could enjoy. In such a case, Gigabit Ethernet (1000M Ethernet) is the best choice to solve the issue to increase bandwidth requirements for growing networks in high-speed data communication.
Gigabit Ethernet (GbE or 1 GigE) is the penultimate evolution of Ethernet standard. In computer networking, it is a term describing various technologies for transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of a gigabit per second (1,000,000,000 bits per second), as defined by the IEEE 802.3-2008 standard. It came into use beginning in 1999, gradually supplanting Fast Ethernet in wired local networks, where it performed considerably faster.
The Gigabit Ethernet standards define a Gigabit Media Independent Interface (called the GMII) to the Ethernet Media Access Control (MAC) layer, management, repeater operations, topology rules, and four physical layer signaling systems: 1000BASE-SX (short wavelength fiber), 1000BASE-LX (long wavelength fiber), 1000BASE-CX (short run copper) and 1000BASE-T (100-meter, four-pair Category 5 UTP). Namely, Gigabit Ethernet can run over three media: fiber optic patch cable (single-mode fiber or SMF, multi-mode fiber or MMF), shielded balanced copper cable and Category 5 UTP. The figure below shows the shows the relationship of the various members of the Gigabit Ethernet technology family.
SMF and MMF Gigabit Ethernet Solution
1000BASE-SX uses a shortwave laser for operation over MMF. The maximum length of segment supported by 1000Base-SX is 550 meters. Take MGBIC-LC01 for example, Fiberstore compatible Extreme MGBIC-LC01 SFP transceiver is designed for 550m transmission with a data rate of 1.25Gbps/1.063Gbps.
1000BASE-LX is specified to work over a distance of up to 5 km over 10µm SMF. It can also run over all common types of MMF with a maximum segment length of 550m. The AA1419049-E6 listed on Fiberstore runs over SMF and can reach the maximum distance of 10km. Besides, Fiberstore compatible AA1419049 is fully compatible Avaya devices and enjoys a lifetime replacement warranty.
Shielded Balanced Copper Cable Gigabit Ethernet Solution
1000 Base-CX is an initial standard for Gigabit Ethernet connections with a maximum distance of 25 meters using balanced shielded twisted pair. In practice, 1000BASE-T has succeeded it for general copper wiring use.
Cat5 UTP Gigabit Ethernet Solution
1000 Base-T transmits the signal over four pairs of CAT5 untwisted pair cables (UTP). Each 1000BASE-T network segment can be a maximum length of 100 meters. It can provide a speed of 1000 Mb/s-10 times the speed of Fast Ethernet- over CAT5 UTP. For instance, Cisco SFP-GE-T transceivers, when used with copper RJ45 connector, can realize 100m reach over Cat 5 UTP Cable. Additionally, Fiberstore compatible Cisco SFP-GE-T is cost-effective and fully compatible with Cisco SFP devices.
1000BASE-T is a good way to improve network performance
by allowing the customer to deploy Gigabit Ethernet over the existing network infrastructure. No costly hardware upgrading or expensive technical expertise is required. But high speed of 1000Mb/s is possible. Fiberstore offers various SFP transceivers for Gigabit Ethernet solutions. Besides MGBIC-LC01, AA1419049-E6 and SFP-GE-T mentioned above, other major bands compatible 1000BASE SFP transceivers are also available, like JD089B, NETGEAR AGM731F, FTRJ1319P1BTL, etc. You can visit Fiberstore for more information about Gigabit Ethernet solutions.
