Oman’s Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm (SEZAD) and OBC (Oman Broadband Company), the broadband vehicle in Oman has signed a MoU to provide high-speed connectivity. The landmark deal for both firms has been inked by top officials in a signing ceremony on Tuesday, 26th December 2018.
The agreement was signed by Yahya bin Said Al Jabri, SEZAD Chairman, and Said bin Hamdoon al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Ports and Maritime Affairs, Chairman of the OBC Board of Directors.
OBC would provide SEZAD its high-speed broadband services delivered over optic fiber network connected to the SEZAD premises ensuring high-quality services. OBC is the licensed communication service provider in the Sultanate. The services provided by OBC to SEZAD would keep pace with the development and growth witnessed by SEZAD as many projects are being implemented in the economic zone.
Local newspapers report that the signing of the MoU is in line with the expectation with the Oman government’s plans to implement the national broadband strategy. The services offered by OBC will help companies and investors operating from the SEZAD to get faster and better quality communication and Internet services.
The MoU will help SEZAD to go ahead with its plans to set up smart cities (smart economic zones) as the broadband services will accelerate the provision of communication and Internet services in SEZAD.
Since its inception in 2014, OBC has deployed fiber optic networks for its individual and corporate customers. OBC would conduct studies the site that should be expanded at SEZAD and necessary measures will then be initiated to expand the network in SEZAD.
Oman is home to one of the major fiber optic cable makers in the MEA region. Oman Fiber Optic Co. S.A.O.G (OFO) located in Rusayl industrial area in Muscat delivers fiber optic cables to customers in Oman and in the entire region. OFO has optical fiber drawing towers and thus has the advantage of the only optical fiber producer in the Gulf region. OFO’s engineering division works closely with many of the OBC deployment projects in the country.
