India Adds 8.5 Million Broadband Subscribers in October

Indian service providers have added 8.5 million broadband subscribers in the month of October 2020. The reports collected by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India from 375 operators in the country revealed an increase of 1.17 % in the broadband subscribers.

At the end of September 2020, the number of broadband subscribers in India was 726.32 million. At the end of October 2020, the subscriber number has reached 734.82 million.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India considers the service as broadband if the download speed is more than 512 kbps (Kilobytes per second). This is an extremely low speed compared to the Gigabits speeds enjoyed by many people around the world. Indian service providers are continuously putting their effort to improve the delivery quality and speed by investing in fiber optic networks.

Wired broadband subscribers that include both copper and optical fiber, in India was 21.12 million at the end of September 2020. Wired solution subscribers increased by 1.85% and reached 21.51 million by the end of October 2020. Wired broadband subscribers are just 2.92% of all the broadband subscriptions. Almost 97% of the broadband subscribers belong to the mobile Wireless broadband group. This shows the popularity of wireless solutions in India.

The subscribers availing broadband services through mobile devices and dongles amount to 712,67 million by the end of October 2020. Service providers could add 8.1 million subscribers to this category of broadband in October, corresponding to a growth of 1.15%.

The number of fixed wireless subscribers is low in India. Fixed wireless broadband includes Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Point-to-Point Radio, and VSAT). At the end of October, the broadband subscribers in this category have reached 650,000. Compared to last month, there was an increase of 10,000 subscribers.

Though there are 375 operators providing broadband services in the country, the top five service providers constitute 98.85% of the broadband market share. Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL, and Atria Convergence are the top five service providers who claim the lion’s share.

Reliance Jio Infocomm with 408.06 million subscribers corresponding to 55.53% market share is the largest player among the top five service providers in India. With 170.23 million subscribers, Bharti Airtel has 23.17% of the Indian broadband market share. Vodafone Idea has 120.50 million subscribers (16.40%), BSNL has 25.87 million broadband subscribers (3.52%), and Atria Convergence has 1.74 million subscribers (0.24%).

At the end of October, the incumbent telecom service provider BSNL has the highest number of Wired broadband subscribers. With 7.75 million subscribers, BSNL is at the top. Bharti Airtel has 2.67 million wired broadband subscribers. Atria Convergence Technologies has 1.74 million subscribers. Reliance Jio Infocomm has 1.70 million subscribers, and Hathway Cable & Datacom has 1.05 million wired broadband subscribers.

In Wireless broadband, Reliance Jio Infocomm claims the number one position with 406.36 million subscribers, while Bharti Airtel claims the second position with 167.56 million subscribers. Vodafone Idea has 120.49 million and BSNL had 18.12 million subscribers. Tikona Infonet comes to the fifth position with 0.31 million subscribers as per the data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
