Deutsche Telekom’s corporate blogger Marion Kessing in a blog post reveals that the year 2020 highlights for the incumbent operator were 5G and fiber optics. The panic created by the pandemic could not stop the deployment in Germany and Telekom has continued massively for the expansion of fixed network and mobile communications this year.
55 million people are now beneficiaries of 5G in Germany. Telekom installed 45,000 antennas in an attempt to deliver 5G services. Telekom has continued its deployment of LTE network also in 2020, which has now reached coverage of 98.6% of the population by installing 5,000 antennas more this year. So far in 2020, 1.6 billion GB of data has gone through Telekom’s network. Data volume via 5G is also increasing month by month.
The blog post says that the average call volume during the lockdown phases was around 50% higher than normal. Data volumes in the fixed network also increased by an average of 30% to 40%. Deutsche Telekom doubled the number of fiber to the home connected properties in 2020. The number has reached 600,000 and 2 million houses can avail of the service at any time.
The majority of 5G antennas installed in major cities and rural areas transmit 2.1 GHz frequency. In addition, 5G is now available in 26 cities on the 3.6 GHz frequency. More than 1,000 antennas are in live operation on this frequency. They transmit in Aachen, Augsburg, Berlin, Bonn, Braunschweig, Bremen, Darmstadt, Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Jena, Kiel, Cologne, Leipzig, Ludwigsburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, Schwerin, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and Wolfsburg. They are also bringing 5G to places like the Allianz Arena in Munich and Frankfurt Airport.
Telekom aims to provide around 80% of Germany with 5G by the end of 2021. In the process, old 3G sites will be upgraded to modern and faster 5G stations. LTE will be used in places, wherever anchor frequencies are not permitted.
Telekom’s networks have reached such a level that it can connect to 33 million houses with up to 100 Mbps. Telekom was able to increase bandwidth for more than four million households in 2020 through up-gradation of the network. Deutsche Telekom has already laid a total of 575,000 kilometers of optical fiber in Germany.
In addition to its own network expansion, Deutsche Telekom is increasingly relying on cooperative ventures. Telekom is cooperating with other companies such as Deutsche Glasfaser, Süwag, and Stadtwerke Münster on future FTTH supply.
