ZTE Corporation’s press release reveals that the company had completed the deployment of a national fiber optic backbone network in Mauritania. This network is the first nationwide fiber optic network in the country and ZTE helped the government of Mauritania for successful completion of the deployment.
Mauritanian national backbone network is an integral part of WARCIP (West African Regional Communications Infrastructure Program), which is financed by the World Bank. This broadband network construction project includes a national backbone network and international network interconnection. The national backbone network construction covers the backbone network and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) construction with a total fiber optic link spanning 1760 kilometers.
ZTE supplied its DWDM/OTN equipment to the project. The transmission speeds of 10Gbps can be achieved with the equipment. DWDM is a technology to bundle multiple wavelengths and send them together along the length of an optical fiber. DWDM technology allows network owners to increase the transmission capacity of optical fibers.
The national broadband network connects to some major international submarine fiber optic cables such as ACE (Africa Coast to Europe), which has a landing station in the country’s capital Nouakchott. With this interconnection, Mauritania is getting connectivity with the rest of the African countries, and most importantly with the European countries.
ZTE said the company was committed since August 2018 for the construction of Mauritania’s national broadband network. ZTE’s engineering delivery team has overcome many difficulties, such as summer’s high temperature of 50 degrees in the desert area, infectious diseases like dengue fever and the Covid-19 pandemic, and the lack of medical resources, and finally completed the network construction on schedule.
The construction of Mauritania’s first national backbone network has played a critical role in the development of communications infrastructure throughout the country and even in West Africa. The deployment and the preceding developments will create more job opportunities for the local population. Fiber optic networks contribute significantly towards the economical growth of a country.
The development objectives of WARCIP are to increase the geographical reach of broadband networks and reduce costs of communication services in the territory of the recipient and between the recipient and West African countries.
