Openreach Selects EXFO Fiber Monitoring Solution

Openreach has selected EXFO’s fiber optic network monitoring solution. EXFO revealed the news through a press release published on its website. Openreach selected EXFO through a tendering process. As per the contract terms, EXFO will supply optical test heads and test access switching for monitoring Openreach fiber optic networks.

Remote fiber monitoring helps networks owners to monitor and report fiber breaks and attenuation changes as and when such events happen. This helps them to rush to the site as soon as possible and take corrective action such as repairing. A fiber monitoring system sends a report that includes the exact length of fiber break and an increase in attenuation. Testing and repairing technicians do not need to run along the network to find out the location of the fault and subsequent repair.

An efficient remote fiber monitoring system helps network owners to reduce network downtime substantially and thereby increase customer satisfaction. Reduction of network downtime is crucial to keep the service uptime, which is a must for many of the customers. With the increase in the dependability of our lives on communication networks, network owners approach the reliability of the network seriously. Remote fiber monitoring solutions help network owners to offer enhanced services to their end-users, whether it is individual subscribers or wholesale bandwidth users.

EXFO’s remote fiber testing & monitoring solutions are built based on fixed Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) test equipment placed at strategic central locations across the network. The condition of fiber optic installations is continuously checked and the locations of degradations or breaks are pinpointed within minutes of occurring. Through optical switching, multiple fibers can be monitored from one location. Optical switching also helps to automate and speed-up the execution of tests throughout various phases of the network lifecycle.

EXFO’s world-leading OTDR and iOLM technologies, users can qualify, certify, activate, troubleshoot, and monitor any point-to-point (P2P) or point-to-multipoint (P2MP) network link. EXFO offers solutions that meet customer needs and budget. EXFO has stand-alone remote test equipment with complete API sets that seamlessly integrate with SDN or workflows and a fully turn-key centralized system that can merge with existing GIS/inventory tool.

The project is essential for delivering next-generation Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks, which provide the digital infrastructure required to work, learn, and socialize. As part of its industry-leading Fibre First program, Openreach has committed to delivering 20 million homes passed with FTTP by the mid-to-late 2020s, assuming it has the right investment conditions. Openreach has also committed to building out this new digital infrastructure to 4.5 million premises by the end of March 2021.

With its cloud-based Nova Fiber solution, EXFO will equip Openreach to assure its build, thereby accelerating the program and avoiding costly return visits to fix connection problems—additional “truck rolls” more than double operators testing costs.1 Following installation, Openreach will be able to remotely monitor its fiber infrastructure supporting the in-life operations of its Full Fibre service.

This announcement comes as Openreach hit a record build rate for its Full Fibre broadband program. Openreach engineers are now delivering faster, more reliable connectivity to another 40,000 homes and businesses every week, or the equivalent of a home every 15 seconds.

Peter Bell, Director, Network Technology, Openreach: “We know that now more than ever that being connected matters. We’re convinced that our new Full Fibre network can play a crucial role in keeping the nation connected. This year, our build has been gathering pace and momentum, and we’re determined to match that rapid speed of deployment with the highest standards of build quality build and customer service.

Openreach has an ambitious plan to build out Full Fiber to millions of households and businesses in the United Kingdom. There is a similar trend in other European markets. As for markets with high FTTH/B penetration rates, telecom operators are finding they need sophisticated automated monitoring tools to ensure a superior customer experience. EXFO’s innovative Nova Fiber solution gives them these abilities.

EXFO develops smarter test, monitoring, and analytics solutions for fixed and mobile network operators, webscale companies, and equipment manufacturers in the global communications industry.
