Position Description:
The Optical Development Leader will manage a group of 3-4 optical scientists and engineers, lead cross-disciplinary product and process integration, and support understanding of end applications to provide insight on material and product development activities and strategies for various Advanced Optics product lines.
Responsibilities:
• Lead a group of 3-4 scientists, engineers and technicians and provide functional supervision
• Share technical insight on multiple optics and metrology projects that the team members are involved in
• Lead optics-based development projects starting with receivership from Research and transfer to Engineering and/or Manufacturing
• Deliver optical products and processes across various product lines by leveraging design concepts in geometrical and physical optics
• Evaluate system-level tradeoffs to optimize design and provide cross-disciplinary feedback to adjacent disciplines (opto-mechanics, optical materials, fabrication, coatings, etc.)
• Investigate existing and potential end-applications of Corning technologies and articulate strategy to address portfolio gaps in development
• Collaborate with Research team in developing fundamental optical tools (models, test-beds, etc.) to test hypotheses around new and adjacent applications of Corning’s optical products and systems
• Understand and participate in road-mapping activities, and help define technology direction for various product lines
• Collaborate with the commercial team to develop value proposition, generate white papers, and support technical interactions with customers
• Stay abreast of technical trends and developments in the industry by attending appropriate trade-shows and conferences
Education:
• Ph.D. or equivalent in Optics, Physics, or Engineering
Experience and skills:
• 15+ year experience in design and/or development of optical products
• Experience in managing scientists and engineers
• Well-versed in application of optics to various industries such as semiconductor fabrication, automotive sensors and consumer electronics devices
• Experienced in technology interactions with customers, with ability to form deep professional relationships
• Strong depth and breadth across geometrical and physical optics, and ability to interface with other technology SME’s (mechanics, materials, reliability, etc.) • Ability to breakdown high-level system needs into sub-system and component-level requirement
• Understanding of optical materials, fabrication techniques, and metrology instruments
• Skilled in how optical materials, devices and systems fit into the application eco-system
• Ability to develop value proposition based on technical evaluation
• Competence in competitive testing and benchmarking
• Demonstrated track record of cross-functional collaboration and delivery of innovative technologies
• Proficiency in Code V, Zemax, Light Tools, or similar ray-tracing software
• Ability to use Matlab, MathCad, C++, or similar tools for mathematical analysis
• Strong technical curiosity, problem solving, and desire to seek out answers and solutions
• Solid organization skills and ability to communicate at all levels of the organization (written and oral)
• Comfortable in working in an ambiguous environment
Travel:
Up to 20% travel to various AO sites and for customer meetings
