The latest update by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) estimates that the country’s broadband services are now available to about 41 people out of 100. The broadband penetration rate has reached to about 41 per cent that makes the country one of the leading ICT developed economies in Africa.
The recent rollout of more than 10,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables across Nigeria has supported the federal government’s National Broadband Plan, targeting 70 per cent broadband penetration in Nigeria by 2025.
IHS Nigeria, through its subsidiary, Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL), has completed the rollout of more than 10,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).
IHS Nigeria has also implemented mobile network coverage in over 580 previously unconnected rural communities in Nigeria through its rural telephony program. By helping to deliver the voice and data services to these communities, IHS Nigeria is working to meet Mobile Network Operators’ rollout targets and support the federal government’s digital inclusion agenda.
Top officials in GICL says that the limited metropolitan and long-haul fiber optic networks continue to be an obstacle to the improvement of existing communication services, and the introduction of emerging technologies and digital services in Nigeria.
GICL’s approach to the deployment of fiber optic cable is to focus on implementing networks on an open access, shared infrastructure basis in order to provide robust and scalable fiber pairs and alternate ducts that can ensure multiple operators utilize the infrastructure.
By collaborating with multiple stakeholders, including customers, state and federal agencies, GICL has achieved a significant volume of fiber optic cable network delivery in under three years.
The Nigerian Communications Commission is the independent National Regulatory Authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria. The Commission is responsible for creating an enabling environment for competition among operators in the industry as well as ensuring the provision of qualitative and efficient telecommunications services throughout the country.
